Letter from Dr. Friedman 6/29/2020
I hope you all are finding creative ways to keep your children active and busy this summer. I understand how difficult it is without the usual flourish of activities such as sports teams and summer camps. Middle school parents should have received an email message from Mrs. Jones today about a virtual summer math camp through Khan Academy. The program is free so please take advantage of it!

As you know, the Illinois State Board of Education released guidance last week on reopening schools.  One of the key components to the document centers around this piece of guidance:

Phase 4 allows schools to provide in person instruction, but: (1) requires use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including face coverings for staff and students; (2) prohibits more than 50 individuals from gathering in one space; (3) requires social distancing be observed, as much as possible; (4) requires that schools conduct symptom screenings and temperature checks or require that individuals self-certify that they are free of symptoms before entering school buildings; and, (5) requires an increase in schoolwide cleaning and disinfection.

As long as we stay in Phase 4, we will be planning how to best bring students back for in-person learning. We are not sure what form this will look like yet or whether it will be a full day of school or partial school day in a hybrid model. We are diligently working on those details through thoughtful planning. Now that we have some direction, we want to hear more from you. We are setting up several virtual meetings for parents to join so we can discuss your concerns and feelings on returning to school. The sign up email will be sent on Tuesday morning. We will offer several dates and will keep the number of parents to 15 for each meeting so that we can hear from each attendee. Please only sign up for one time slot.

I also want to start talking about wearing face coverings. I know this is a controversial topic, with parents forming strong opinions. The state guidelines very clearly state that students will be required to wear a mask or face shield all day while in school. Regardless of how you personally feel about wearing face coverings, if you are planning to send your children to school next year, we need you to help prepare them. It is important to show a good attitude. Your kids are going to follow your lead on this so we need you to stay positive and enthusiastic about wearing masks.

If you have already decided to homeschool your child for the school year because of the face covering requirement or any other reason, please email me directly as soon as possible. We want to support you and need accurate counts to plan in-person learning.
