Remote Learning Days will be counted as student attendance days. It is important for a parent/guardian or student to sign-in every morning by 10:00am by filling out the appropriate Google Form. (please see below) Thank you for your help with keeping our attendance accurate.

Letter from Dr. Friedman 03/31/2020

Dear Parents and Community Members:

I hope this message finds you and your families safe and well. Today, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced that remote learning in Illinois will be extended through APRIL 30th in order to slow down the spread of COVID-19. During this time, on-site learning will remain suspended but our schools’ commitment to learning and education will remain open and learning will continue for all students in the form we are presently delivering it in.

While it is not ideal, we want to assure you that at Emmons, our teachers and staff are fully engaged and willing to take on this new challenge and push forward with remote learning, engaging with students and continuing with our food distribution program. In order to plan for this continuation of services, staff will engage in Remote Learning Planning Days on  APRIL 6th and APRIL 20th.  During these planning days, teachers will spend time developing lessons and students will not be engaged in formal learning. Instead, students can catch up on assignments, work on projects, redo assignments, and work independently on the enrichment opportunities provided by specials teachers.  I also want to remind you that we are still honoring the school calendar.  Therefore remote learning will not be in session on APRIL 10th and APRIL13th.

I know this is not the school year that any of us imagined, but I want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we have dealt with this unprecedented situation together.

It’s important we continue to work together and support our students. Thanks again.

Letter from Dr. Friedman dated 3/29/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times. While we never anticipated a situation like this, I want to assure you that the staff is very dedicated to serving your children and providing them with learning opportunities that are meaningful and valuable. Of course, we need your help keeping your students on track and engaged with the teacher from home. I am writing tonight because we have new guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education for the period of March 31st- April 7th and I want to communicate some changes we will be instituting to our initial plan. As I am writing this message to you, President Trump extended the social distancing guidelines to April 30th. Please know that our current plans for remote learning can continue through an extended closure. I will keep you updated as the Governor responds to President Trump's recommendation.

The Governor has created a new type of school day titled Remote Learning in place of Act of God Days. While the title is different, Emmons students will continue with the same services already planned. As stated in earlier communications, teachers will deliver lessons and assignments remotely each day and be available from 8:30-1:30 to answer student questions and provide support. We are following the Illinois State Board of Education's recommendations for student engagement: K-2 up to 90 minutes a day, 3-5 up to 120 minutes a day, 6-8 up to 180 minutes a day. Additionally, enrichment opportunities from our specials teachers will also be offered.

These days will be counted as student attendance days and contribute to the 176 days of student attendance. We are asking each student to "check-in" by 10:00am EACH morning through a Google Form that will be sent out to parents and posted on the front page of the Emmons website. The attendance requirement will start on TUESDAY, March 31st.

While we are asking that parents/guardians become active participants with us by holding students accountable for the work assigned, grading practices will not negatively impact a student's overall grade. We will switch to a Pass or Incomplete designation for assignments. Teachers will provide feedback and give students opportunities to redo, retake, or make up work as needed to reach a "passing" level. Of course, the more students engage in the learning the better they will perform in the future. Please help us keep your students on track! Please look for communication from your student's teachers.

Also included in the guidelines from the Illinois State Board of Education is the allowance of Remote Learning Planning Days. These days are designated as teacher plan days to prepare remote lessons. If the school closure is extended, as expected, then we will have our first Remote Learning Planning Day on April 6th and continue to have a planning day every other Monday moving forward. If we are returning to school on April 8th then we will have a Remote Learning Planning Day on April 7th to prepare for the students to return to school on April 8th. Teachers WILL NOT be providing lessons during the Remote Learning Planning Days. We encourage students to use these days to catch up on assignments, work on ongoing projects, read or listen to books, and practice math facts. This would also be a good day to engage in enrichment opportunities that the specials teachers (art, music, STEM, library, PE) have provided.

Please let us know, as soon as possible, if you do not have internet service in your home. Comcast is offering a free service and other providers are offering hotspots to schools. We can help if you are having trouble getting your child connected. We don't want any student unable to learn from home due to lack of internet services.

We will continue to provide Grab-And-Go lunches to anyone who needs them. Please email or call Lisa Lawler at or 847-395-1105 to make arrangements for pick up. This is open to any Emmons' students in need.

We hope everyone in the Emmons community is doing well and practicing social distancing to continue to stay safe. We miss all of our students! I am including a chart that outlines the responsibilities of each stakeholder group during Remote Learning Days. It is a wonderful reference about the partnership we are all contributing to in order to provide the best learning for our students. Stay well. We are here for you!
