Emmons Student Challenges Code Program

posted Oct 5, 2018, 11:34 AM by Heather Heiden

We have some exciting news to share about a recent Emmons graduate, Christina Brown!
Alice is a platform for learning code. Students in Ms. Theiler’s class read The Last Lecture, a book based on the last lecture of Randy Pausch, who was a professor and computer scientist at Carnegie-Melon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer in the science of building virtual worlds including creating the Alice project as a way for students to learn programming in a fun way. Unfortunately, Mr. Pausch died of pancreatic cancer a few months after he gave the lecture.
As an enrichment activity, Ms. Theiler’s class participated in Computer Science Education Week the first week in December and continued to work with the Alice software to learn coding and to create stories. Emmons student, Christina was having a problem where the world she was creating was
crashing often and for no apparent reason. Our technology department reached out to Don Slater, the current head of  Alice.org, to see if they could help Christina. Mr. Slater asked us to share Christina’s story she was working on so he could see what was happening. He was so impressed with the world that she had created, that he asked if they could share it on their website.

Please check out the Alice website to see Christina’s story and for more information!

Dismissal Changes

posted Sep 1, 2017, 9:01 AM by Donna Trischan

The attendance email (attendance@emmons33.org) can be used to communicate a dismissal change, but we ask that you only make changes to a child’s dismissal when absolutely necessary. In an effort to keep our students safe, we are asking that you do not change how they go home. Dismissal changes can cause confusion and back up our parent pickup line. Long pickup lines can only filter out onto Beach Grove Road, which is not only a safety issue, but can prevent our buses from entering our parking lot, thus delaying the release of the buses once they are loaded. In the event of an emergency and you have to make a change to your child’s dismissal, please note that we cannot accept any changes after 2:00pm. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
